The mind is a terrible thing...

My dad’s sister Irma died yesterday. It wasn’t unexpected. She’d been ill for some time, and there had been a number of close calls in the past. Aunt Irma had a disease called Lewy Body Dimentia, a condition that combines the worst of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Over time, victims lose cognitive ability, mobility and the ability to talk. It’s an awful disease without clear treatment or cure. I’ve learned much about it because my mother has it as well. Invariably the physical effects progress more rapidly than the neurological aspects. The body becomes a prison for a mind that struggles to make sense of what’s happening to it. One day perhaps there will be a way to prevent, cure or treat LBD. Until then, the Lewy Body Dementia Association is helping to build awareness and find a cure.
